Although many people think of syringes with needles as being complete units, there are actually several parts to a syringe. The body of the syringe is known as the barrel. The piston is the fitting inside the barrel that forces the liquid out and its shape can make a major difference in performance. Tips slip over the needle end of syringes to close the unit when not in use while end caps are placed on the other end for the same purpose. Not only do these pieces prevent leakage they also can keep substances from drying inside the barrel. Of course, this still leaves the needle. Most styles of syringe can accept several different dispensing needles of various sizes and shapes to allow for precision application of the contents. This type of arrangement is commonly used with a manual gun that has the mechanism to apply pressure to the piston as well as providing a convenient handle for the unit.
